93 POINTS: James Suckling

"Perfumed, with flowers, dark berries and some raspberries. Medium-bodied with a solid core of fruit and firm tannins. Hints of chocolate and berries. Flavorful finish. Needs a little time to open, but already precise and focused. Drink or hold."
- James Suckling

"The 2020 Chianti Classico Fonterutoli is 90% Sangiovese blended with small parts Malvasia Nera and Colorino, all aged in oak for an easy 12 months. This wine offers a classic interpretation from Castellina in Chianti with bright fruit, lots of cherry, background tones of earth and crushed flowers. You will appreciate the basic energy and finesse of this wine."
- Robert Parker's - The Wine Advocate

Sourced from the same 114 parcels used to produce Fonterutoli’s top range Gran Selezione, Chianti Classico is the flagship estate. Made with 90% Sangiovese, 5% Malvasia Nera and 5% Colorino and aged for 12 months in small French oak barrels and has an ageing potential of 10 years. Aromas of violet, dark and red berry dark and hints of chocolate. Medium-bodied and elegant with a solid core of fruit and firm tannins. Will pair well with dark sauce pastas, BBQ, boiled meats with spicy sauces, aged cold cuts.

Fonterutoli is located near Siena on hills facing the Val d’Elsa, in the heart of Chianti Classico. Owned by the Mazzei family since 1435, Castello Fonterutoli promotes local varieties which express the identity of their land, while respecting nature and its diversity. The vineyards spread over 110 hectares divided on 144 single parcels with altitudes ranging from 220m to 570m. The estate is densily planted and produces very limited yields. Grapes are top quality making full-bodied wines with structure, balance and freshness.

An excellent follow-on to the sold-out Rocca de Montegrossi Chianti Classico 2018

This wine continues to display the new Chianti style, with heaps of fruit, excellent balance and approachable tannins after some decades of disappointment from Tuscany. At this price, a very affordable wine to make a meal special that would otherwise have perhaps been a bit mundane. Recommended.
