Domaine René Bouvier Burgundy 2015

Domaine Rene Bouvier has owned vineyards in the village of Marsannay in the Côte de Nuits for the last four generations. These days, Bernard Bouvier runs the 12 hectare estate, a man who is keen to combine the traditions of Burgundy to the technological advances of modern viticulture.

The estate is fortunate enough to possess vines which are an average of 50 years old and some of the Gevrey-Chambertin plots have vines which are over 80 years old. The estate is equipped with new, modern buildings, designed with hygiene in mind, which have been in place since the 2006 harvest.

The domaine currently produces wine from around 13 different appellations, and all are tended to organically, without fertilisers and with minimal amounts of sulphur and other treatments. All the grapes are hand-harvested meticulously, and the harvest is followed by fermentation in barrel and then aging in small oak casks for 12 to 18 months, with around one-third of the barrels having new wood. The end product of this process is a wine that is both easily accessible and yet excellent aged, fruity and deep with a real sense of power.

The philosophy of the estate is the quest for purity of expression, well-balanced wines with minerality, highlighting the unique nature of each “climat”. This guides each action in the pursuit of perfection from the vineyard to the wine-cellar. The terroir itself is the hallmark of quality here.

As to the 2015 vintage, Bouvier was openly enthusiastic, noting that "we obtained basically perfect maturities and I have never seen cleaner fruit which helped with rapidly bringing in the fruit. I began the harvest on the 7th of September under essentially perfect conditions. I used up to 50% whole clusters. Moreover the skins were quite thick and there was a high incidence of shot berries so it was no surprise how dense and tannic the reds are. "I really like the reds because they have enough baby fat to make them enjoyable young but they also have the concentration and structure to allow them to age gracefully for years."

"There are several standouts here, including the old vines Chambolle and Gevrey cuvées."
