Jean-Marc Pavelot Savigny-lès-Beaune, 2015

Jean-Marc and Hugues Pavelot illustrate yet again Burgundy’s apparently endless capacity to generate father-son teams that transition seamlessly from one generation to the next. The focus here is on low yields and attention to detail in the vineyard, with their very old vines producing the greatest wines of the appellation. The vines of the Domaine average over 70 years of age, and many are almost 100 years old. These are classic Savignys and in a great vintage like 2015 offer incredible value.

Vintage 2015
Domaine Jean-Marc et Hugues Pavelot have been setting the standard in Savigny-lès-Beaune in recent years and their 2015s are probably their finest yet. Savigny-lès-Beaune is too often looked down upon by cognoscenti and yet these 2015s are up in the same echelons as the great Vosne-Romanée or Gevrey-Chambertins. It is up to you whether you want to pay the premium those villages now demand. I tasted through the domaine wines and the négoçiant wines under the "Hugues Pavelot" label. "I did not have too many worries in 2015," Hugues told me as we tasted at the domaine. "Just the Beaune Bressandes is flirting with over-maturity.  "The red wines are classic Pinot Noir with good structure and density, with fine fruit." As I mentioned, I adore these wines and if you want to see what Savigny can know where to look. Here."
