La Spinetta, Piedmont

* Wines Due Late November 2018

The Rivetti family story begins in the 1890s, when Giovanni Rivetti, left Piedmont for Argentina. Like many Italians then, he dreamed of returning as a rich man, perhaps even one day being able to make great wine in his homeland. He never did, though his son, Giuseppe “Pin” did. Pin married Lidia, bought vineyards and began to make wine. In 1977 the family took up residence at La Spinetta (top of the hill) in Castagnole Lanze. It was the heart of the Moscato d’Asti country. The Rivettis believed that Moscato had the potential for greatness and set out to prove it by making Moscato Bricco Quaglia and Biancospino.

Over time the family’s vision grew even grander. In 1985 La Spinetta made its first red wine, Barbera Cà di Pian. After this, many great reds followed: In 1989 the Rivettis dedicated their red blend 'Pin' to their father. From 1995 to 1998 they started to make their first Barbaresco 'Gallina', Barbarescos 'Starderi', Barbera d'Alba 'Gallina', Barbaresco 'Valeirano', and the Barbera d'Asti Superiore. In 2000 the family began making a Barolo and built a state of the art cellar, Barolo Campè. Now regarded as amongst the very finest Barolo and Barbaresco producers, the rest as they say, is history.

"This is a beautiful set of Barbarescos from proprietor Giorgio Rivetti and his team. The evolution at La Spinetta since the mid 1990s has been remarkable. Back then, the wines were dark, concentrated and oaky. Today, the Barbarescos are a true Nebbiolo-red. French oak signatures are present, but there is less emphasis on the toastier notes that new barrels add, and more an impression of light toast aromas and flavors. The 2012s are supple, open-knit and ready to go - all signatures of the year."

"La Spinetta is synonymous with one of the most distinctive winemaking styles in the Langhe. The wines are easily identifiable in a blind tasting because, across the board, they offer a uniquely intense aromatic delivery. The bouquets on the 2013 wines are deeply fragrant and fruity; the 2012 vintage is more integrated with spice and tobacco. These are extremely personalized wines."
