Le Pin - Pomerol

Le Pin is one of the most expensive wines in the world and alongside Petrus is considered a legend of Pomerol. Le Pin is a deeply sumptuous wine with a style that is exotic and voluptous, but also pure and accessible - just as Pomerol should be. It is called Le Pin from the solitary pine tree that grows near the winery. Alastair and Ryan shared a bottle of the 1999 Le Pin at a BBQ in Bordeaux with Francois Thienpont a few years back - we all got on like a house on fire and he has graciously given us a small allocation.

Madame Laubie, whose family had owned the plot since 1924 sold the one hectare vineyard in 1979 to the Belgian Jacques Thienpont for 1 million francs. The vineyards were developed by the Thienpont family who own the fabulous neighbouring Vieux Château Certan, and the wine was originally produced in tiny quantities from a farmhouse basement almost on a hobby basis at first. This is superb land, just north of the hamlet of Catusseau, composed of deep, well drained Gunz gravels over Fronsadais molasse (loamy-clay) with 100% Merlot vines planted surrounding the winery - averaging 40 years of age.

Jacques Thienpont has his own ‘keep it simple’ winemaking philosophy which means the wine shines, not only in great vintages but in lesser ones too. Le Pin is one of the few Bordeaux properties that operates on a more Burgundy-like scale and is often called the “Richebourg” of Bordeaux for it’s Burgundian finesse. This is due in part to it’s aromatic complexity, precision and beguiling style, as well as its miniscule size of production - with gentle extractions,  malolactic fermentation done entirely in barrel and the use of small microcuves and gravity to move the wine.

Sadly, only 500 cases (15-17 barrels) of wine are produced each year, and very few make it down to wine lovers in New Zealand. We have held these wines in optimum cellar conditions since purchase via Francois Thienpont. This is a rare opportunity to own - and enjoy - one of the legends of Bordeaux.
