Mark Haisma, Burgundy 2015

Mark Haisma was, for a decade, winemaker at Yarra Yerring with the late Dr Bailey Carrodus. Now he’s making his own wine, acting as one of a new breed of micro-negociants in Burgundy & the Rhone Valley. (Mark is one of three Australian winemakers in Burgundy, along with Jane Eyre and Andrew Nielsen)

Mark rents a select group of plots in Burgundy, and works them in a hands-on meticulous way. Once he picks his grapes he makes wine from them in a rented space in a cellar in Gevrey Chambertin (Pierre Naigeon’s)

It’s a model that a number of passionate young winemakers are following. In Burgundy, vineyard prices are totally crazy—and that’s when you can get your hands on decent patches of vineyard, which hardly ever come on the market. This makes it pretty much impossible to start out in the region. But if you are reasonably well connected, not to mention hugely driven, you might be lucky enough to purchase decent grapes, and Mark has lived in the region since 2009 and fostered some extremely important friendships.

Mark sells mostly to private customers and restaurants. He has a very organic business model and practice, which is built on hard-work, passion, respect for the terroir, and no small amount of talent! We were lucky enough to be in the right place at the right time to snare an allocation of his stunning wines - and can happily report that from Bourgogne to Premier Cru they deliver brilliant Pinot character with vibrancy, finesse and superb energy. Absolutely impossible-to-put-your-glass-down Burg's here folks!
