Portugal - Douro Valley

Portugal’s appellation system is comparable to that of France with it's classic wines governed by a central body - In Portugal it is the Instituto da Vinha e do Vinho. The region of the Douro is entitled DOC (Denominaçao de Origem Controlada) appellation which comprises three distinct regions: Baixo Corgo to the west, Cima Corgo, the heart of the Douro Delimited Region, in the centre, and Douro Superior, to the east. The Douro Valley was listed as a World Heritage Site by UNESCO in 2001 and is characterised by it's unique terroir and the large number of microenterprises, with over 40,000 winegrowers each owning under 2 hectares of vineyards on average. We have two of the most internationally renowned producers now available.

Cap Wine Portugal - Douro Valley
Two of the most prestigious estates in the Douro region - Quinta Beira and Quinta do Malhô were formally owned by Francois Lurton who has now passed on his interests to CAP WINE International which was established by three founder-partners - Pascal Debon, André Tremblay and Christine De Caix-Lurton - great friends who share a love of vineyards and authentic wines. They decided to set up Cap Wine to purchase high potential wine estates in order to develop and produce wines that showcase the best possible expression of the Douro valley. This is a superb region where pre-phylloxeric vines are planted in steep terraces overlooking the majestic Douro river. With the same winemaking team available under Francois Lurton and his consultancy through to 2011/12 they are continuing to make magnificent wines with the magical blend of local Tinta Roriz, Touriga Franca, Touriga Nacional, Tinta Amerela and Sousão grape varieties.

Churchill's Estate - Douro Valley
Churchill-Graham was founded by Johnny Graham in 1981, scion of the famous Graham Port house. The house carries his wife’s surname ‘Churchill’ after which the Ports are named. Churchill Graham has also been one of the protagonists of modern Douro Valley wine, made with the indigenous and noble red varieties, offering much greater accessibility to the wider international market. These wines under the ‘Churchill Estates’ banner have quickly gained a following for their unique character, not only from the varieties used, but also their expression of place. The company has various tiers from the fruit-expressive wines to single quinta bottlings - designed to age.
