Miopasso Nero d'Avola 2016
GOLD MEDAL: Berliner Wein Trophy
RECOMMENDED: Decanter Magazine
RECOMMENDED: IWC
SILVER MEDAL: IWSC
Ridiculously delicious. This new find from Sicily (where else!) has got us very excited indeed. It is made using the 'Apassimento' method of production where a portion of the grapes are air-dried before fermentation and is best-known as the standard method used for producing the blockbuster Amarone wines of Veneto in northern Italy. But used here in sunny Sicily the result is an explosively fragrant, concentrated, rich and flavourful
… wine with fabulous length and freshness on the finish. Exciting stuff, really one of the most interesting reds we've found in ages.
"Deep, purple/red with an incredibly intense nose featuring black pepper and spices. The palate offers layers and layers of fruit with bursts of dark berry fruit, offering excellent balance and complexity, with a soft, long finish."
