Martin Codax Albariño 2010
Martin Codax Albariño 2010 Albarino - Spain's great white hope!Gold Medal: Selections Mundiales des Vins de Canadá The Martin Códax winery was founded in 1986 by a progressive group of winegrowers, and since that time it has become a point of reference within the Rías Baixas region of north-west Spain. Albariño is the signature, aromatic white grape variety from Rias Baixas, with a style that can be similar to Viognier. This version offers a delicate yet forceful peachy aroma on the nose and palate. Unoaked, it is fermented in stainless steel and is wonderfully concentrated in flavour yet still feels fresh and zippy. After last year's Wine Direct xmas party we can assure you that this wine with grilled scallops fresh off the Barbie is an unbeatable match!Produced under the stringent rules of the Rias Baixas Denominacion de Origen (DO), Martin Codax Albarino is thoroughly food friendly and designed to be consumed young. This is an aromatic wine, elegant, dry and crisp on the finish. The key aromatic notes are peach, passionfruit and apple. Acidity is bright and integrates well with the aromatic elements into a balanced whole. Albarino stands on its own as an aperitif but is at its best when matched with food, especially seafood."A little leesy on the nose, but mostly it's forward and lemony. The palate is citric and crips as a whistle, with lemon, green apple and a secondary sweetness akin to pineapple. Focused and clean on the finish: chiseled and defined."- 90 Pts Wine Enthusiast Magazine So, who was Martin Codax? He was a medieval Galician troubadour who lived in the latter part of the 13th century. His songs and poems were discovered by chance in an ancient library at the beginning of the 20th century and since then he has become a regional folkloric legend in Galicia. His songs were invariably about wine, women and the joys of life.
