Another stunner from First Drop. This quirkily named Barossa Shiraz takes the term ‘velvet smooth’ to a whole new level! So why 2%? This astonishingly svelte Shiraz contains 2% of Albarino! This little known white grape adds a splash of funk that lifts the base line fruit and adds that X factor we have come to expect from all First Drop wines.

"Opaque ruby color. Emphatically syrah on the nose: peppery black raspberry and cassis scents along with violet face powder, smoked meat and graphite. Nervy and focused, offering lively black and blue fruit flavors and a numbing note of cracked pepper. More red than dark fruits on the finish, which leaves tangy minerals and Asian spices behind.
- 91/100 Stephen Tanzer

"Supple and generous, offering a lively mouthful of plum- and pomegranate-laced cherry and spice flavors, weaving black pepper and licorice notes through the long, expressive finish. Drink now through 2012.

Domaine Robert Groffier

Burgundy has about a thousand vineyards, which is quite enough for even the keenest of memories. But making things even more complicated is the fact that virtually all of them have multiple owners. This makes for quite literally thousands upon thousands of different wine labels.

Among these many thousands of labels, Robert Groffier is now considered to be one of the very finest. With seven hectares of top vineyard land in the Cote d'Or, including Chambolle-Musigny, Bonnes Mares and Chambertin Clos de Beze, Groffier has some outstanding material to work with. The time and effort Serge and Nicolas Groffier (Serge's son) give to the vineyards is paying back handsomely and correspondingly low yields lead to wines of real purity and class; indeed they are among some of the purest expression of Pinot Noir anywhere. Groffier's wines are powerful, featuring deep colour, good structure and plenty of tannin for Pinot Noir.

The Chambolle Amoureuses is often the most forward, showing lots of ripe, succulent berry fruit from the moment it hits the bottle. The Bonnes Mares is deeper with much more muscle but with lots of obvious fruit underneath. Groffier is similar to many top winemakers in that his winemaking techniques are flexible and vary from vintage to vintage. Some years he includes stalks in his fermentation and some years he does not. Each year he will do a cold maceration for five to six days followed by a hot fermentation that extracts lots of colour and flavour.

Domaine Robert Groffier Bourgogne Pinot Noir 2007

This is notably ripe without going over the top with a seductive nose of red and blue pinot fruit, violet and earth notes that introduce rich, fresh and energetic flavors that are supported by buried tannins and fine length. This is a terrific wine that is complex, elegant and quite serious, indeed unusually so for a Bourgogne. Highly recommended.

Lush, concentrated and sweet, but with noteworthy vinosity and sappiness to the tangy red berry flavors. The slow-mounting finish is positively electric, saturating the mouth with perfume. "Good deep red. Slightly reduced raspberry and coffee aromas are lifted by an exotic suggestion of white peach; subdued but fresh. Silky on entry, then sweet, fine-grained and subtle in the mid-palate, with noteworthy clarity of flavor. This is unusually suave for an infant Bonnes-Mares, but then that's the Groffier style. Domaine Geantet-Pansiot

This domaine could be a case study for the current trend in Burgundy and how it is shaping the future: the son takes over from the father and the quality curve arches immediately skyward. That was certainly the case when Vincent Geantet took over from his father, the estate is now really emerging as a star of the appellation. Even Robert Parker calls it, "One of the up and coming domaines of the Côte d'Or."

Though only just landed, we've tried through all these wines already. And, at the risk of stating the obvious, the range makes for really interesting drinking. Meaning, the six wines in the range may all be from Pinot Noir made in exactly the same way by the same winemaker in the same vintage. But because the six wines constitute three different villages and (at least) five different vineyards, each wine has a very distinct personality. You really see the vivid role of Burgundian terroir in these wines, and it makes for fascinating tasting.

Château de la Tour

Château de La Tour is the largest, and one of the most important producers in Clos Vougeot. The domaine itself is located right in the vineyard, on the northern side of the Clos Vougeot and just down the slope from the fabled, sixteenth century Château de Clos Vougeot.

With holdings of six hectares of old vines in Clos Vougeot, from which they make both a Clos Vougeot and a Vieilles Vignes bottling (the latter hailing from vines between eighty and one hundred years of age). Their parcels are right in the heart of the vineyard, on the upper slopes that surround the two châteaux and lie just below Musigny.

The domaine is one of the few owners in the Clos Vougeot that continue to practice organic viticulture. Vinification techniques here are quite traditional, with no de-stemming taking place prior to fermentation at rather high temperatures and aging for eighteen to twenty months in cask prior to bottling. The resulting wines are built for long-term cellaring, with their more black fruity and powerful personalities fully blossoming after a decade or more of bottle age in top vintages.

Château de la Tour Clos-Vougeot Grand Cru 2006

"This is quite ripe in the context of the vintage and the relatively late harvesting date shows as the nose gives up notes of earth and spice-suffused raspberry and cherry liqueur that is most seductive and this accessibility extends to the strikingly complex, serious, intense and precise big-bodied flavors that are powerful and extremely primary, supported by buried tannins and excellent length. The mid-palate concentration makes this seem more forward than it really is and this should age very well over the medium term. In a word, lovely." 91/100 Burghound

"As with the ‘07 examples, the nose is quite similar to its ‘06 counterpart though here the fruit is denser and perhaps ever so slightly riper and leads to serious, driving, vibrant and superbly well balanced concentrated and broad-shouldered flavors blessed with plenty of dry extract and well-integrated wood. A terrific example that is built to age. Recommended and very promising."
93/100 Burghound

Producer note: François Labet succinctly told me that 2006 is a “vintage that is the definition of pinot without excess. There is very pure fruit, elegant mouth feel and tannins and ultimately, wines of pleasure. Yes, 2005 is a better vintage but the difference isn’t nearly as much as people presently believe though the ‘06s will drink well earlier. We began picking on September 26th and brought in yields of between 25 and 30 hl/ha with excellent sugars of between 12.3 and 13.3%. I destemmed nothing as I had good ripeness and so I did essentially a normal vinification.” While Labet is correct that his ‘06s do not rival his fantastic ‘05s, he is also correct that the qualitative differences are really fairly minor, at least at this early stage.

Domaine Comte Senard

In case you haven't heard the legend of the hill of Corton's dual personality, here it is: As the story goes, the Emperor Charlemagne had a penchant for the silky, spicy reds from Corton, but unfortunately could not keep his beard from dipping into his glass. His wife became so disgusted with his wine-stained beard that she ordered white grapes to be planted on part of the hill. The part of the vineyard planted to Chardonnay soon garnered a world-wide reputation as well. The wine is known as Corton-Charlemagne.

A nice enough story but perhaps easily refuted by taking a closer look at the plantings. The hill of Corton peaks at 388 meters and is capped by trees at the top. The vines stop at around 360 meters up, and from this height downhill to about 250 meters is where the Grand Crus are located: named Corton if red and Corton-Charlemagne if white. The Chardonnay appears to be planted mostly on marly soil, while Pinot Noir is planted on the more reddish-brown chalk soils.

The Corton territory spreads over 284 hectares in total, 96 hectares of which are categorized as Aloxe-Corton, 38 as Aloxe-Corton Premier Cru, 101 hectares as Corton red and white Grand Cru, and 49 hectares as Grand Cru Corton-Charlemagne.

Philippe Senard candidly said that “while 2006 produced great whites, I was honestly quite surprised by the quality of the reds. They’re not nearly as far the ‘05s as one might have thought given the relatively poor August weather that we had. It’s important to point out though that the two vintages produced very different kinds of wines. The ‘06s are based on their fruit whereas the ‘05s are based on their structure. I like the ‘06s as it’s a vintage of pleasure and the wines are fruity, fresh, balanced and very transparent plus they will give their pleasure young.”

Domaine Remi Jobard

Remi Jobard is the intelligent and dynamic son of Charles Jobard, and the brother of Francois (another well-known Burgundy producer in his own right). You've heard the phrase family run operation a hundred times before, but this truly is; Remi's mother does all the bottling by hand! Jobard produces mostly Chardonnay from Mersault, as well as a small amount of Aligoté and Pinot Noir. To capture all of the texture and nuance Rémi now also bottles all of his wines without filtration sixteen months after vintage.

The Genevrières vineyard is divided into four contiguous parcels totaling 41 acres in the very heart of Meursault's southern premiers crus. It takes its name from the presence, years ago, of the juniper bushes which covered its slope, and it is sometimes said that the tang of this aromatic berry can be detected in the wine.

The Meursault En Luraule displays floral, hazelnut and honey notes with freshness. “It’s the most ‘typical’ Meursault in my cellar," says Jobard. "It fits the description of Meursault that you read in books.”

There’s more density in the Les Chevalières, and the Poruzots-Dessus is refined and elegant. The Genevrières is a bit riper and more exotic, with a spicy quality and it builds to a long finish.

We get only tiny amounts of these wines and it's important to us that whatever remains after we've drunk and cellared our fair share, goes to good homes. If you'd like to apply for custodianship of a few bottles, call to present your credentials to Alastair or Ryan on 09 529 5267.

Here the wood influence is less subtle as the toast is now accompanied by vanilla and wood spice notes that frame high-toned lemon-infused aromas that complement well the rich, full and relatively generous medium-bodied flavors that culminate in a racy, intense and impressively long finish. The wood treatment will likely integrate and I like this as it's very Meursault in character. Worth a look.
- 88-90/100 Burghound

Brighter, muskier aromas of orange oil, hazelnut and oatmeal; very Meursault! Then sweet, round and fresh, with more intensity and stuffing than the Sous La Velle. Finishes with firmer fruit and more length.

Ripe green fruit, earth and an herbal note are set off against a very subtle touch of wood toast that precede the rich, full and solidly powerful and concentrated medium weight plus flavors brimming with dry extract that confers an almost chewy feel to the finish. This offers plenty of depth and I particularly like the length and while this cannot compete with the two following wines in terms of elegance or finesse, this is very Poruzots in character.

A notably more refined and classy aromatic profile offers up pure and spicy floral, spiced pear and white peach aromas that dissolve seamlessly into textured, complex and silky medium-full flavors that are balanced, stylish and beautifully persistent on the very dry finish. I really like the intensity and overall sense of harmony here.
- 92/100 Burghound

Good pale, green-tinged color. Ripe, sweet aromas of lemon, lime and vanilla. A sweet, fat big boy with uncanny energy and typicity for such a rich, ripe Meursault. Finishes with very good minty lift and excellent length. Jobard hasn't used chemical fertilizers since '94 and he believes that this has slowed down his vines' maturing process and allowed him to harvest his Genevrieres at more reasonable alcohol levels.
- 92/100 Stephen Tanzer

Almost racy in style, featuring citronella, hazelnut, vanilla cream and mineral flavors. It's beautifully put together, with intensity and grace, ending with a mineral aftertaste. Drink now through 2018.
