We're in love with the value wines of Sicily. And nothing we've found so far is a better advertisement for them than the 'Canapi' wines. Nero d'Avola is the main red variety of the island, and most of you are already familiar with it through trying our hugely popular Corallo or Serenata wines.

The Canapi Nero d'Avola is another example of super-plummy, ripe, easy-drinking Sicilian red. And wine critic Sam Kim agrees with us...

"rich and ripe, the lifted nose displays dark plum, cherry and stonefruit characters. The palate is succulent with lush texture and well balanced acidity leading to a gently drying finish. A supple and well flavoured red ideally suited to partner everyday meals, and represents sensational value for money."

Your favourite Sicilian slurper now comes in the colour Pink!

Rosé is winning more and more fans on a grand scale and it should come as no surprise that the rosé versions of our hugely popular Sicilian reds are every bit as tasty. Sharing all the easy-drinking charm of its bigger brother (i.e the Nero d'Avola), Canapi Rosé is full of Summer berry freshness. Incredibly refreshing and perfect for outdoor entertaining, or just a nice chilled glass on its own. Great with seafood or BBQ chicken.

"Sicily continues to shine as Italy's star performer", writes The Times of London. With 180,000 hectares under vine, it produces more than double the amount of wine that Australia does and with an outstanding climate for viticulture, is just starting to fulfill its enormous potential.

"It's subtly fragrant on the nose showing citrus, tropical fruit and floral characters. It's well fruited on the palate showing silky texture and nicely balanced acidity leading to an attractive dry finish. This is a really great wine for those who enjoy more gently flavoured dry white wine."

Back in stock! A fresh boatload of your No.1 Italian red has just landed...

The mighty Corallo has been your favourite Italian red for a number of years, and for good reason: It's unbelievable value!

Rated 90/100 by Sam Kim; Wine Orbit.
And wine writer Joelle Thomson recently had this to say about it:

"Corallo beats every other red wine I can think of at this price - plus many more costing twice this money."

"Smooth, velvety black fruit and plum flavours, with an enticing hint of spice from "Sicily's finest red grape", Nero d'Avola. This complex, velvety red has the inviting aromas and flavours of gently spiced blackcurrant and blueberry. Juicy and very drinkable, this delicious Italian is delightful with pasta, cheese or just about anything!"

Grillo is a white grape variety from Sicily that was once known only for being a major constituent in the production of Marsala. But increasingly it is being transformed into a characterful, aromatic, dry white wine. And this example is an absolute beauty!

Deliciously Rich Pinot Grigio From Sicily.

A fabulous new arrival from our favourite winery in Sicily - where so many of our best value wines are coming from nowadays.

In Sicily's terrific 2008 vintage the boys at Canapi (who also make Siva) found a small parcel of vines high in the sun drenched hills. These yielded exceptionally ripe, concentrated Pinot Grigio grapes, that they knew would make a world-class white to rival the priciest offerings from anywhere in Italy. They sent us a sample and we were all over it! And hey presto, now it's here available to you. Cracking wine at a cracking price.

Juicy pear and orange blossom aromas lead to a ripe and rich mouthful of zesty citrus, pineapple and other tropical fruits. Gently spicy with a refreshing, crisp finish.

Wow, stupendous stuff! We try to keep our superlatives to a minimum but every now and again there's a wine that just blows us away. This wine is awesome.

Ridiculously delicious. This new find from Sicily (where else?)has got us very excited indeed. The wine is made using the 'Ripasso' method of production which is best-known as the standard method used for producing the blockbuster Amarone wines of Veneto in northern Italy. But used here in sunny Sicily the result is an explosively fragrant, concentrated, rich and flavourful wine with fabulous length and freshness on the finish. Exciting stuff, really one of the most interesting reds we've found in ages.

"Brimful of juicy, sweet berry flavours, some jam, spice and dried herb notes. Just lashings of soft black fruit and spice in this richly complex and exotic Sicilian red. It finishes with impressively clean, fresh acid considering all that richness."

If you've enjoyed any of our bargain-priced Sicilian reds before, think of this as a turbo-charged version! This is on a completely different quality level, but still outrageously good value at well under twenty bucks.

Cerasuolo di Vittoria, one of the first Sicilian wine regions to be awarded the DOC quality status in 1973, is produced from the indigenous Nero d'Avola and Frappato grapes. The quality of this soft, elegant Sicilian wine style has now been further recognised by Cerasuolo di Vittoria achieving DOCG status in 2005. Today, the renaissance of top quality Sicilian wines is once again founded on the success of these two grape varieties growing in the exceptional Sicilian climate.

The two grape varieties are harvested at different times as they ripen at different rates and are therefore also vinified separately. Intense ruby in colour, the bouquet is reminiscent of dark berries. The palate is soft, well-rounded, very elegant and generous, with a long finish.

This wine won a Gold Medal at the recent 'Mundus Vini' wine competition. It is currently farmed organically though it won't receive its full organic certification until the release of its 2009 wines.

Powerful and refreshing organic Pinot Grigio from Sicily.

The eco-friendly Purato Pinot Grigio/Catarratto is hand-harvested from organically farmed vineyards in sunny Sicily. The family who grow the grapes for this zesty white has been farming for generations and follow simple, all natural organic methods such as cover crops, organic manure and natural herbicides, allowing them to completely eliminate the use of chemical fertilizers, pesticides, and herbicides. The vineyards are inspected by, and receive their certification from, Bioagricert, one of the top organic certification bodies in Europe.

"A gently fragrant wine displaying lemon zest, stonefruit and a hint of dried herb characters on the nose. The palate is beautifully weighted with fine texture, balanced acidity and a lingering dry finish. If you love elegant and subtly flavoured wine with lovely mouthfeel (rather than a fruit bomb) this is a must try. It's certified organic too. At its best: now to 2011."

It's sumptuous and rounded on the palate with succulent mouthfeel and modest acidity leading to a nicely dry finish. The firm tannins at the end make this a superb food partner. Yum! Wow this might be even tastier than the Cotes du Rhone.

Many of you will recognise the yellow Jehan Guillaume label from our best-selling Côtes du Rhône, but they also make an excellent red from the Costières de Nimes that we’ve just brought in for the first time recently. Costières de Nîmes is a region that lies between the ancient city of Nimes and just north of the wetlands of the Camargue. It used to be a part of the Languedoc wine region, but is now considered more of an extension of the southern Rhône, producing characterful, spicy red wines primarily from Grenache and Syrah.

“An opulent and sweet-scented nose showing blackberry, dried fruit and spice characters. The palate is succulent and super-smooth with excellent weight, texture and nicely drying cocoa tannins. A beautifully approachable wine representing amazing value. At its best: now to 2012.”

Glorious Chianti, Italy's best-known red wine.

20 years ago Chianti was synonymous with the wicker-covered flasks of cheap plonk found in every Italian restaurant. Today the Chianti region boasts some of the world's finest wines. But it also produces loads of food-friendly bargains that somehow always seem a little more 'grown-up' than most other comparably priced quaffers.

Fontella is a traditional Chianti, being predominantly Sangiovese with a splash of Canaiolo and Colorino. Medium-bodied and easy-drinking in style, it is stainless steel fermented to maximise freshness and fruit expression. The resulting soft, harmonious flavours of dark cherry, plum, chocolate and marzipan make this wine taste like it could be three times the price.

Your favourite French red is back!

In terms of value, this is as good as many Rhône reds with much better-known labels that cost twice as much. If you are one of these label buyers we hear so much about, stay away from this one. Everything good about this wine is inside the bottle, except the price. That'll be why Jo Burzynska, wine writer for the NZ Herald, named the last vintage as one of her "Credit Crunch Crackers" and went on to call it, "One of the best value wines I've tried this year and something that could easily be passed off as a far more expensive bottle." Tons of character, soft tannins, plenty of stuffing and a dash of black pepper. This wine is just so drinkable and mouth-filling, it seems to stain your palate with Rhôneness.

Jehan Guillaume is what the British wine trade might call a "bistro style Cotes du Rhone" which does actually describe the wine a little better than you might think: It's tremendously easy to drink, well-balanced, with plenty of sunny, southern French character all in a medium-bodied package making it very food friendly.

A selected blend of Grenache and Syrah. It has a fruity and fresh bouquet of raspberries and other red berries. Pleasantly powerful and well-balanced, with good length, it can be enjoyed at a relaxed and happy dinner table with most dishes.

We tasted through a couple of dozen pretty 'ordinary' Bordeaux before we discovered the stand out - Ch Saint Romans, and what a beauty!

This succulent, Merlot-predominant Bordeaux red is an impressive combination of winemaking talent and ripe, plum-filled fruit from vineyards that have been under the same family ownership for well over a century. It bursts with fresh redcurrant and blackberry aromas, silky-smooth in texture with lashings of velvety Merlot fruit. A great partner to roast beef or lamb, or anything off the BBQ.

Domaine de la Mordoree Tavel Rosé 2008

Brothers Fabrice and Christophe Delorme find their Domaine in the fertile but frustrating territory of what can only be described as 'superstar status', frustrating in the sense that there is seldom enough wine to go round. Rather unusually, however, for a top Châteauneuf-du-Pape property, they are based a little further to the West in Tavel, and Tavel, historically, is the home of Rosé.

No surprises therefore, that their Rosés are amongst the best, many say the very best, in all of France. But if you thought that Tavel Rosé was merely Grenache, think again! Farmed on 40 year-old clay chalk soils, strewn with pebble stones, the Mordoree Tavel is a complex blend, made from 60% Grenache, 10% Cinsault, 10% Mourvèdre, 10% Syrah, 5% Bourboulenc and 5% Clairette. A 48 hour cold maceration has been enough to extract a gloriously rich rose-red colour and complex aromatics of Blood Orange, with a little red liquorice and spice thrown in for good measure.

"The palate is rounded, a strawberry and raspberry fruit basket of indulgence, yet firmly structured and with hints of aniseed on the finish. As one would expect from such a serious wine, this is a perfect match for all summer cuisine; indeed the Delormes specifically recommend stuffed tomatoes à la Provencale, sea bass, or, rather further afield, paëlla....plenty of food for thought, as long as you don't forget that this is a delicious Rosé to get stuck into."

Musky exotic nose of vanilla, pineapple and other tropical fruits.

To ensure all the delicious aromas of Viognier and the rich fruit flavours of Grenache Blanc were retained, Tuilerie use cool fermentation techniques in the cellar. They keep the wine unfettered by oak so the blossom, peach and apricot flavours shine through, leaving this southern French white simple, but downright delicious.

This is our favourite Tuilerie wine!

But we just can't keep it in stock. Cuvee Vieilles Vignes, tightly allocated around the world, is in such demand because the quality to price ratio is so outstanding. This is a serious, old-vine Syrah from some of the best terroir for the variety outside of the northern Rhone - and all for $25!

Black cherry and dark berries on the nose, with touch of vanilla, sweet spice and chocolate. Subtle oak-spice on the palate, velvety smooth tannins and a long chocolately finish.

This is Ch de la Tuilerie’s top cuvee.

Made from 100% old vine Syrah, this is a rich, velvety and very age-worthy wine. The nose offers notes of grilled meat, with a multitude of ripe berry aromas, enhanced by delicate game characters from its time maturing in bottle. On the palate, the wine has a fresh attack, balancing out its richness and strength. Tannins are immediately present, yet are fine and silky on the finish. A very harmonious wine.

Situated at the southern end of the Burgundy region, Mâconnais is home to some of the best white wines in the world!

"No Burgundy lover should ignore the buzz in Mâcon today" reckons Andrew Jefford, (one of our favourite wine writers).

Jean-Jacques and Gilles Corsin produce some of the most striking white wines in the Mâconnais, and their indefatigable pursuit of quality puts them in high demand as consultants.
The Corsin wines are among the finest whites we have to offer and yet they remain remarkably well-priced. In fact, their price-to-quality ratio is, to use a nasty phrase, "off the charts".

Gilles' 2008 Macon Villages has creamy lemon curd and smoke aromas. Lovely ripe grapefruit, peachy notes and mouthwatering mineral characters that linger on an intense and long finish. The standard here is unbelievable for just twenty five bucks.

Olivier Merlin is widely recognized as one of the very finest winemakers in the Mâconnais, and has received numerous rewards for his breathtakingly beautiful, minerally-infused and racy Mâcons. Along with Domaine Corsin these are wines that simply tower above ninety-nine percent of all producers in the Mâcon, with a depth, complexity and structural integrity that have much more in common with more illustrious neighbors in the Côte de Beaune.

In his handsome winery at La Roche Vineuse, Olivier Merlin produces a superb range of white Mâconnais wines which exemplify the district's qualitative renaissance. They are richly substantial, while vinification and elevage in wood confer a seductive but never over-stated woodiness blended with the attractive minerality derived from their terroir.

(Vinified 100% in stainless with 60% young vine fruit of the domaine mixed with 40% purchased old vine fruit). The expressive nose is noticeably more complex with a similar but more densely fruited profile that complements peach and pear suffused flavors that enjoy a light hint of finishing minerality. This is uncomplicated and straightforward but it’s also delicious and appealingly refreshing. This too is ready to drink.

"An overtly exotic but layered nose of lightly spiced yellow fruit and mango aromas leads to delicious, textured and mouth coating flavors that possess good mid-palate fat that buffers the powerful and naturally sweet finish that displays good energy and length on the muscat and lychee nut infused finish."

A gentle hint of wood frames citrus blossom and white pear aromas that are ripe but fresh and this sense of freshness also suffuses the textured middle weight flavors that possess good mid-palate fat as well as the vibrant and more obviously stony finish.

"Henri Pellé is Menetou-Salon's finest producer." - Robert Parker, The Wine Advocate.

Parker certainly isn't the only one who thinks so. Pellé is widely regarded as the best producer in Menetou-Salon which lies just to the east of its more famous neighbouring appellation, Sancerre.

The Domaine has 75 organically farmed acres in and around the small town of Menetou-Salon. Here, the soil is classic Loire tuffeau which is porous calcareous limestone made up of millions of fossilized oyster shells from millenia ago. This soil gives rise to the brilliant fresh minerality of the region's white grapes and in particular Sauvignon Blancs like these ones.

At Domaine Pelle the winemaker Julien Zernott gravity presses all of his wines, and ferments them with natural yeast and they are all aged on their lees, which gives the wines extra flavour and textural dimensions and certainly adds greater potential longevity than most of their Kiwi counterparts as well. These wines are delicious and well worth investigating over the coming summer months.

Bright straw. Zesty grapefruit and lemon zest aromas dusted by minerals. Crisp, nervy citrus and green apple flavors show an airy quality. Light and lively wine with a clean, brisk, persistent finish

Beaumes de Venise, an attractive village in Vaucluse, next to Vacqueyras and Gigondas, was upgraded to AOC status in 2005 for its good-quality, medium-bodied, fleshy, peppery reds. But as a region however, it remains much better-known for its delicious, sweet, fortified Muscats which have their own AOC: Muscat de Beaumes de Venise.

Despite its minimum 15% alcohol, low acidity and intense sweetness, Muscat de Beaumes de Venise is surprisingly delicate and refreshing with a lovely floral fragrance and sweet, pale-gold, grapey fruit. Made exclusively from the best Muscat variety, Muscat Blanc à Petits Grains, it is made by adding pure grape spirit to the must when it has reached 5% alcohol. It should be drunk young, lightly chilled, either as an aperitif, or with dessert - where it makes a really great match for vanilla ice-cream!

93/100 by Tony Love The Advertiser, Adelaide
Another stunner from First Drop. This quirkily named Barossa Shiraz takes the term ‘velvet smooth’ to a whole new level! So why 2%? This astonishingly svelte Shiraz contains 2% of Albarino! This little known white grape adds a splash of funk that lifts the base line fruit and adds that X factor we have come to expect from all First Drop wines.

"Opaque ruby color. Emphatically syrah on the nose: peppery black raspberry and cassis scents along with violet face powder, smoked meat and graphite. Nervy and focused, offering lively black and blue fruit flavors and a numbing note of cracked pepper. More red than dark fruits on the finish, which leaves tangy minerals and Asian spices behind.
- 91/100 Stephen Tanzer

"Supple and generous, offering a lively mouthful of plum- and pomegranate-laced cherry and spice flavors, weaving black pepper and licorice notes through the long, expressive finish. Drink now through 2012.

Proprietor Jean-Jacques Sabon and the other younger family members are taking these wines to even greater quality heights than previously attained. The new vintages possess updated, more polished labels, but more importantly, the wines continue to go from what were very strong efforts in the past, to even deeper concentration, complexity, and depth.

Sabon’s Cotes du Rhone is a shrewd buy for bargain-hunters. Kirsch notes intermixed with some underbrush, licorice, and garrigue are followed by a lush, richly fruity, engaging style of wine that is ideal for everyday drinking.
