Alsace is the source of some of the world's finest white wines and the spiritual home of the world's favourite aromatic grape varieties; Riesling, Pinot Gris and Gewurztraminer. But it also offers much, much more. Muscat, Sylvaner and Pinot Blanc for a start, excellent sparkling wines and some of the very best dessert wines money can buy. They even produce pretty decent Pinot Noir. This diversity of wines and styles is accounted for by the array of different soil types and the range of vineyard exposures and altitudes throughout the region. Alsace is also famed for being the birthplace of biodynamic viticulture in France, dating back to 1924; it has the country's highest proportion of biodynamic producers.
