Mosel
Mosel is one of 13 German wine regions recognised for the production of quality wine and takes its name from the Mosel river (known as the Moselle in French). Until 2007 the region was called Mosel-Saar-Ruwer, but changed to a name that was considered to one considered more consumer-friendly. The region is Germany's third largest in terms of production but is easily the leading region in terms of international prestige. The Mosel is famous for its steeply sloping slate vineyards overlooking the river. At an almost 70 degree incline, it is home to the steepest vineyard in the world, the Bremmer Calmont. Needless to say, manual labour is the only way to attend to these vineyards, mechanisation being entirely impractical. The Mosel's reputation lies with its serendipitous relationship with the Riesling grape, but Elbling, Müller-Thurgau and Kerner also contribute to the production.
