Domaine Santa Duc Gigondas

"As good as Gigondas can be.."
— Robert Parker

Domaine Santa Duc is located at the foothills of the beautiful Dentelles de Montmirail and is named after the “Canta Duc” (a Provençal word for a singing Duke owl), which has over time become known as the Santa Duc. The charming and effervescent owner Yves Gras (fourth generation) has the air of a man with complete confidence in what he’s achieved, and rightly so. He is very respectful towards nature, caring for his vines and maintaining biodiversity in his vineyards. Vines are grown on calcareous marls and red stony clay soils.

The combination of these contrasting soils and very old vines gives balanced wines, that are both full-bodied and elegant, with complex garrigue aromas and super fine tannins. Yves’ wines always show fantastic concentration and longevity and have been a firm favourite here at Wine Direct for over 20 years.

Yves Gras has been producing some of the most impressive examples of Gigondas since the mid-1980s, and he has been joined by his son, Benjamin, who, as of the 2017 vintage, has taken over most of the responsibilities at this 23-hectare (13 of them in Gigondas) domaine. Gras senior has long been highly regarded for producing some of the appellation’s most powerful and ageworthy wines, but recent vintages have revealed an increasingly greater degree of elegance, with no lack of depth or flavor intensity"
— Josh Raynolds, August 2018

"Yves Gras’ 22-ha domaine has been one of the AOC leaders in Gigondas for a decade or more now, and the cuvées seem to acquire new chocolaty, earthy depth and intensity with every year that passes."
— Andrew Jefford, The New France
