Luigi Einaudi Barolo 2016
This is our very first allocation from this great Piedmont Estate. And what a way to start - a 2016 Barolo offer with an old Vines Dogliani Dolcetto showcase! (Please Note Wines are due February 2021)
"Einaudi is another historic estate that is in the midst of a pretty significant stylistic change. The wines are now made in a much more classic style than in the past, with long macerations and aging exclusively in cask. Proprietor Matteo Sardagna has increased his vineyards significantly in recent years, ushering in one of the most dynamic periods of growth and change I have seen here since I started following these wines more than twenty years ago."
— Antonio Galloni,
The Einaudi estate was founded in 1897 when the 23-year-old Luigi Einaudi bought the San Giacomo farm in Dogliani with 16 hectares (40 acres) of vineyards. Over the years, Einaudi rose to prominence as an economist and politician, eventually becoming President of the first Republic of Italy in 1948. Despite this, Einaudi was known for never missing a harvest.Today, Poderi Luigi Einaudi owns 11 properties with around 145 hectares (358 acres) of vineyards. The vast majority of these are in Dogliani, with just 7ha (17 acres) dedicated to Barolo. The winery was in full production as early as the 1920s, but was completely renovated in 1993. The majority of the facilty is underground which assures constant temperature and humidity. Red wines are fermented in stainless steel tanks with automatic pump overs, and are matured in a combination of barriques and larger barrels made from French oak.
While famous for their stunning Barolo, Einaudi's core release includes the Dogliani DOCG Dolcetto, aged in stainless steel tanks, which accounts for around half of the estate's annual production. Einaudi also makes a more premium Dolcetto wine, Vigna Tecc, which is a Dogliani Superiore from selected old vine vineyard parcels that spends a year aging in oak.
