Weingut Günther Steinmetz - Mosel, Germany

We have just landed a brilliant selection of old vine German Riesling from Stefan & Sammie Steinmetz. After James Suckling & Stuart Pigott MW reviewed the entire range of this grand Domain with an in-depth tasting last month, we knew they would become some of the most highly sort after white wines from the great 2019 and 2020 vintages.

When an internationally acclaimed Riesling expert of the calibre of Stuart Pigott MW scores these wines so highly - availability becomes increasingly endangered! Fortunately we have been able to secure a few dozen of each wine from most of their highly regarded Mosel Class 1 (Grand Cru) vineyard sites.

The reviews here are simply stellar and we have been offered a broad range of dry, steely Rieslings of incredible depth and minerality, plus classical Kabinett and Gold Capsule Auslese & Spatlese. Also available is the very limited Monopole Reserve Riesling - from the Dhroner Grosser Hengelberg Vineyard - considered one of the finest micro-locations in Germany.  We are proud to offer them on a first-in first-served basis to our valued fine wine customers.

Since 1900 the Steinmetz family have been growing Riesling on very steep slate slopes located primarily in the famous Central Mosel sites of Brauneberg, Mühlheim, Dhron, Piesport, Kesten & Wintrich.

In 1999, at the tender age of 21, Stefan Steinmetz took over the management of the Steinmetz winery which was his father's role since 1973. Since then, he has meticulously worked on improving the quality of the wines in order to get them as focused and clearly representative of their amazing terroirs. Stefan Steinmetz does not see his job in gimmicks in the basement, but in transporting the fingerprint of his steep slopes into the glass. The range of locations from the Günther Steinmetz winery is broad but the core can be found in Brauneberg - starting with the Mandelgraben up to the Juffer and the Juffer Sundial. However, Stefan does not limit himself to the Brauneberger locations but tirelessly added additional locations in Mülheim, Kesten, Dhron, Wintrich and Piesport. Riesling dominates the grape variety list, which is filigree on the various types of slate from the steep slopes of the Moselle, which have always been so difficult to manage.

In the vineyard, the Günther Steinmetz winery relies on natural management - Stefan completely dispenses with fertilizers, herbicides and fungicides. From the growing season to the harvest, meticulous manual work is the way to success. During the year, the aim is to achieve low yields and during the harvest it is hand-picked and the grapes are sorted according to quality and vinified individually. In the cellar there is no deacidification or acidification, no chaptalization and no clarifying agents, animal products for fining and pure yeasts are used. Stefan doesn't get any enzymes in his wine either. All wines are fermented and aged spontaneously in stainless steel or wooden barrels.
