Austria is a well-respected wine-growing country, yet unfortunately very few examples find their way to our market. But what we lack in terms of choice of Austrian wine we do at least partly make up for in value-for-money. The relative anonymity of these wines and their top producers does tend to keep a lid on the prices. Like its neighbour Germany, Austria produces a wide range of varieties but Riesling is king just as it is in Germany but the style is very different; much dryer and in some ways more powerful. And interestingly, to the rest of the world it is Austria’s number two grape - Grüner Veltliner - that holds most interest. The best Grüner Veltliners are wonderfully exotic, spicy, versatile wines that offer complex and delicious drinking, usually for relatively little outlay.
